What usually goes wrong, and how it shows up

Before you call, and after

Start simple. Confirm the thermostat is set to cool and has fresh batteries, check the breaker and the outdoor disconnect, and replace a dirty filter. If the coil is iced, switch the system off and run only the fan for a few hours, because running it frozen can harm the compressor. To prevent repeat trouble, gently hose off the outdoor coil a few times a year to clear salt. Keep plants and stored items about two feet back, and flush the condensate line with diluted vinegar each spring. Test the AC in late spring, before the first hot week, so small problems don't turn into emergencies.
