Why older systems fall behind and what we check first
Most comfort complaints trace back to a few causes. The equipment may have been undersized or oversized from the start, or the ductwork may be leaky or poorly routed. A worn blower or compressor can also be to blame, as can a home that has changed since the system went in, such as a remodel, new windows or a converted garage. Before recommending anything, a technician measures the house room by room, looks at insulation, sun exposure and window area, and inspects the ducts in the attic or crawl space for gaps, crushed runs and undersized returns. For homes without AC, we check whether existing ducts and electrical service can support cooling or whether a ductless setup makes more sense.
How high-end built-in systems differ from standard equipment
Larger homes in Malibu, the Palisades and the hillside neighborhoods often have high-end systems with concealed, built-in air handlers. These may use variable-speed or inverter-driven compressors, multi-zone dampers and thermostats that talk to the equipment over a dedicated communication line. A standard single-stage system simply switches on and off, which makes it easier and less costly to diagnose. High-end systems run longer at lower speeds, hold temperature more evenly and use less energy. The tradeoff is that they rely on control boards, sensors and brand-specific error codes. Repairs often call for proprietary parts that may need to be ordered, and some components sit in tight attic or closet spaces. We work on both and explain the tradeoffs before you choose.
When to call and what to check yourself first
Some problems have simple fixes. Check that the thermostat is set to the right mode and has fresh batteries, replace a dirty filter, make sure supply and return vents aren't blocked by furniture or rugs, and confirm the breaker for the outdoor unit hasn't tripped. Clear leaves and debris from around the condenser. Near the coast, rinsing salt film off the coil also helps. Call us if the system runs constantly without reaching temperature, short-cycles, blows warm air, trips breakers repeatedly, smells of burning, or needs repairs every season. Those are signs it may be time to replace, and we'll tell you honestly whether repair still makes sense.

Our freezer stopped working recently. When I called West Appliance Service they came to my home to assess the problem within 1 hour of calling. They were able to come back the next day to complete the repairs once they knew what parts they needed. The service was quick, smooth, and well done. We had a great experience working with Ivan and highly recommend anyone to use their services. We will definitely be a repeat customer if our appliances need repair.
